Hyla DeWitt’s passion for jewelry design began at a young age. As a child, Hyla accompanied her mother to Peru to visit family and friends, but spent much of her time there having custom jewelry designed at the local jewelry stores out of gemstones she collected during her travels.
At age 16, Hyla was inspired by her sister, a jewelry designer in her own right, to begin making jewelry as presents for her friends at Ashley Hall. After receiving rave reviews on her jewelry, Hyla began to expand her jewelry business. Hyla started off with small jewelry shows around Charleston, and in no time she was selling pieces at Susan Michelle, a Charleston boutique.
After graduating from Ashley Hall High School in 2004, Hyla chose to attend the University of Alabama. Tuscaloosa proved to be a fertile ground for Hyla’s jewelry business. She sold jewelry at several boutiques in Tuscaloosa, including Solo and Part Two. Hyla also had occasions to design jewelry for sorority sisters’ debutante balls, Mardis Gras, and weddings!
Hyla graduated in 2008 from the University of Alabama and journeyed to Chicago to begin a career in graphic design. After a brief hiatus from her jewelry business, Hyla realized a renewed interest in jewelry design and her jewelry business. Hyla continues to be inspired to create unique fashionable, and chic jewelry that can be worn everywhere from the grocery store to a friend’s wedding.
